Yohji Yamamoto 1980s Archive Brown Wool Square Neck Deconstructed Top
An early archival piece from Yohji Yamamoto's 1980s Marumoji (round-letter label) era, this deep brown wool top explores the relationship between simple forms and unconventional construction.
The distinctive square neckline extends horizontally across the collarbone, framed by a softly structured, almost architectural shoulder line. Crafted from fine wool in a deep chocolate brown, the jacket features a relaxed, boxy silhouette with dropped shoulders and long sleeves. Its understated appearance conceals a thoughtful approach to pattern cutting and proportion.
The most interesting detail lies at the back, where the shoulder seams are shifted towards the rear and a series of precisely placed seams create subtle changes in structure. The uneven hem, longer at the back with overlapping pointed panels, allows the silhouette to transform depending on how the garment is worn. Left loose, it falls naturally over the body; cinched with a belt, it takes on a more sculptural shape.
