From Issey Miyake's AW1986 WINDCOAT collection, this trench coat reflects the designer's early exploration of volume, movement, and the relationship between clothing and the body. Introduced in the 1980s, WINDCOAT explored the possibilities of outerwear through generous proportions, carefully controlled construction, and silhouettes that respond naturally to movement and air. Rather than relying on conventional tailoring alone, these designs allow the fabric and the space surrounding the body to become part of the garment's form.

Compared with the more voluminous pieces from the WINDCOAT line, this particular design is remarkably restrained. Its defining feature is the transition from double-breasted fastening across the upper body to a single-breasted construction below, creating a subtle shift in structure and overlapping layers when worn open. The softly rounded sleeves introduce volume around the shoulders and arms, while the waist is precisely shaped to balance the generous upper body with the flowing, subtly flared hem. The back is particularly considered, with clean waist definition and carefully balanced proportions that give the coat an elegant architectural silhouette.

This is the second example of this particular design to enter the LOVA collection. Having revisited its construction and proportions over the years since the first piece was sold, we continue to appreciate the precision and restraint of its design.
