A runway piece from Junya Watanabe's Autumn/Winter 2008 collection, featured in Look 6. The collection explored the sculptural possibilities of knitwear, transforming soft, fluid fabrics into complex architectural silhouettes through draping, twisting, and unconventional construction. Drawing on the traditions of Madeleine Vionnet and Madame Grès, Watanabe reinterpreted classical drapery through a distinctly experimental approach to form. Crafted from fine, lightweight wool jersey, this dress features a continuous construction in which the sleeves and skirt are interconnected. The arms emerge through discreet openings within the fabric, creating an unusual suspended drape, while the voluminous skirt gathers into rounded, balloon-like folds. The intricate construction is completed by a concealed twisted zipper at the back. Despite its sculptural appearance, the fluid knit allows the garment to move naturally with the body. An especially compelling example of Watanabe's ability to reconcile technical complexity with an effortless sense of movement, capturing the collection's exploration of structure, material, and the space between garment and body.
