Antique 1900s French Edwardian Bertha Collar with Floral Guipure Lace
An antique French Bertha collar dating to the Edwardian era, circa 1900–1915. Originating in the 19th century, the Bertha collar evolved into a lighter, more delicate form during the Edwardian period, extending softly across the shoulders and décolletage. Detachable lace collars were an important element of women's wardrobes at the time, allowing different garments to be adapted and embellished.
This example features intricate guipure lace with scrolling botanical motifs, arranged in an openwork composition with scalloped, pointed edges. The elaborate pattern creates a delicate interplay between ornament and transparency, while the collar's broad, curved silhouette drapes naturally over the shoulders. Originally ivory, the lace has aged into a warm, pale tea shade over more than a century. It can still be worn over knitwear, dresses, shirts, or jackets, introducing a subtle Edwardian character to contemporary silhouettes.
